If a natural disaster such as a cyclone or flood occurs in the area where you are holidaying or planning to travel and you need to postpone or cancel your trip, you have certain rights under Australian Consumer Law. There may also be other instances when you are required to leave an area or are prevented from entering in the first place, such as when the accommodation has been destroyed, access roads have been closed or the authorities have advised the area is not safe to enter.

To complement Queensland’s existing Disaster Management arrangements, the Department of Tourism and Sport has prepared advice specific to tourists and tourism operators in the event of a natural disaster. While the advice is expected to be accessed via the internet, where serious disruption occurs to power and/or telecommunications it is recommended that tourist operators and relevant organisations have some copies printed for distribution.
